Isolation of an N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complex of a Borasilene

Getting ahold of B=Si: Borasilenes, that is complexes with a boron-silicon double bond, constitute an elusive heterobimetalloidic species with only very few isolated examples known to date. The first N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-stabilized derivative of such complex is described herein and pronounced zwitterionic character is found for its B=Si bond. The positive charge resides at B and new boron cations as structural congeners are presented.

Control of different orientations of μ3-NO3− has been realized to join heterometallic clusters (Cu10Dy2) and subsequently form a left-handed double-helix chain, which further joins to form metal-helix frameworks (MHFs). Four different directions of bridging μ3-NO3− exist, three of which are involved in the linkage of the double-helix chain (see figure).

Two types of alkenes were installed through a palladium-catalyzed enantioselective alkenylation of enelactams using a relay Heck strategy. Under the mild reaction conditions, both electron-deficient and electron-rich alkenyl electrophiles work well for the reaction delivering 6-alkenyl substituted α,β-unsaturated δ-lactams.

Hyperpolarization of Amino Acids in Water Utilizing Parahydrogen on a Rhodium Nanocatalyst

Molecular naturism: 13C-hyperpolarization of unprotected natural amino acids is achieved in water, using parahydrogen induced polarization (PHIP). The strategy is promising for biological applications, since chemically unmodified amino acids are obtained directly in water, using a separable nanoparticle catalyst. Inexpensive 13C-hyperpolarization of natural amino acids is now at reach for biological studies (see figure).

Interfacial Study of Nickel-Modified Pt(111) Surfaces in Phosphate-Containing Solutions: Effect on the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

The presence of nickel deposits on Pt(111) induces phosphate adsorption at low potentials. This is due to a negative shift of the potential of zero charge, induced by nickel adsorption, which creates a positive surface at lower potentials. Phosphate co-adsorption stabilizes the nickel adlayer, which oxidizes at much higher potentials. The mixed nickel phosphate adlayer is investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, CO charge displacement, and temperature jump. Hydrogen evolution in the presence of this adlayer is investigated using a rotating disk electrode.

A Lithium-Free Energy-Storage Device Based on an Alkyne-Substituted-Porphyrin Complex

Morphology matters: In a Li-free battery cell with organic electrodes consisting of a tetra-acetenyl-substituted porphyrin, the nanobrick- and nanoribbon-morphology porphyrin samples show higher rate cyclability than the nanosheet sample. Lead it go: Lead-free Cu-based 2 D and 3 D hybrid and inorganic perovskites (A2CuBr4; A=CH3NH3 or Cs) are examined as anode materials in Li-ion batteries. A high reversible capacity of 630 mAh g−1 is realized in the 2 D hybrid perovskite at 100 mA g−1, and a good reversible capacity of 420 mAh g−1 is also obtained for the 3 D perovskites case.

VS<sub>4</sub>-Decorated Carbon Nanotubes for Lithium Storage with Pseudocapacitance Contribution

Superior storage: VS4 nanoplates tightly bound to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) demonstrate pseudocapacitance-assisted lithium storage. The effective coupling between VS4 and CNTs ensures fast electron transfer and high stability. The VS4/CNTs anode exhibits high capacity, superior cycling stability, and good rate capability and indicates the potential application of metal sulfides with pseudocapacitive contribution in lithium-ion batteries.

Asymmetric Organocatalytic Conjugate Addition of Electron-Rich Phenols and 1,3-Dicarbonyls to Arylsulfonyl Indoles in an Oil-Water Biphasic System

The asymmetric conjugate addition of electron-rich phenols and 1,3-dicarbonyls with arylsulfonyl indoles catalyzed by bifunctional organocatalysts have been established. The chiral 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles derivatives were obtained in good to high yields (up to 99 % yield) with high enantioselectivies (up to 98 % ee). This study showed that oil-water biphasic system contributed to the high efficiency and stereoselectivity.
