Will your Chemistry Make the World a Better Place?
“Could your latest discovery be the basis for a new medicine, material or an entirely new industry? What steps should you take next on the road to real world impact?”
S. Caddick, Nature Reviews Chemistry 1, Article number: 0030 (2017)
The European-Winter School on Physical Organic Chemistry (E-WISPOC), at its 14th edition, turns the spotlight on the pervasive role of Chemical Science for the achievement of the “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” identified by UN as the imperative mission for a sustainable future with a target date of 2030 (A. Krief et al. Nature Chemistry, 2015, 7, 941).
The School aim is to reach out to the young researchers who have the biggest potential for creativity and innovation: the essentials of Frontier Research. The School is especially designed for PhD students, post-docs and for everyone who is committed to courageous, original, groundbreaking research that can make our World a better place. To do so, E-WISPOC, offers an outstanding educational and training program targeting a “challenge-oriented” approach.
Along a three-year roadmap at the heart of “Frontier Research”, in each edition a thematic fil-rouge is proposed to highlight the key role of Molecular and Materials Science for application in three priority areas underpinning the SDGs’ agenda:
Energy: Creating and securing environmentally sustainable energy supplies, and improving efficiency of power generation, transmission and use.
Human health and Food: Improving and maintaining accessible health, including disease prevention.
Raw materials & Feedstocks: Creating and sustaining a supply of renewable feedstocks, by designing processes and products that preserve resources.
